J.H. Rose Students Hold STEM Camp at Ridgewood Elementary

PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – More than a dozen kids participated in a summer camp this week to learn more about science, technology, engineering, and Math, which two high school students founded and put on.

This is the second year for the STEAM RISE camp at Ridgewood Elementary School in Pitt County.

The camp is a nonprofit founded by two J.H. Rose students, Saanvi and Anya Kumar.

Its mission is to Reach, Inspire, Share, and Empower students through engaging, hands-on education in STEM and artificial intelligence.

STEAM RISE President Saanvi Kumar says, “Today they are making a terrarium. We are talking about environmental science and we talked a little about plants and now we have a interactive activity.”

This summer, the camp introduced the Young Innovation Lab, designed to help students tackle real-world problems through hands-on projects in data science and Python programming. In addition to the capstone project, campers took part in daily activities such as Mental Math, Science experiments, Engineering challenges, Arts and Crafts, and Environmental Science.

STEAM RISE Vice President Anya Kumar says, “I saw at first they were a little overwhelmed with the code and slowly they got familiar with it and when they were done with their project they were like this is really cool.”

The students also had the opportunity to show their parents what they learned during the week.
